West Lakes Pickleball Project
MASTER PLAN
After two years of research, planning and community input the City of Orono approved a Master Plan for the creation of a nine-court pickleball plaza in 2024.
OUR MISSION
The West Lakes Pickleball Project is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of residents of Orono and its surrounding communities. Pickleball is not only a fun sport to play, but also a powerful tool to combat social isolation, a major cause of mental and physical health issues and early death.
Impact on Health of Social Isolation and Loneliness
Social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of mortality from all causes, a risk that may rival the risks of smoking, obesity, and physical activity (Holt- Lundstad et al.,2017)
Loneliness has been associated with higher rates of clinical depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation (Beutel et al., 2017)
Loneliness has been associated with a 59% increased risk of functional decline and 45% increased risk of death (Perisinotto et al., 2012)
Social isolation has been associated with an approximately 50% increased risk of developing dementia (Kuiper et al., 2015; Penninkilampi et al., 2018)
Classes, Programs and Court Availability
A very active community of pickleball players already exists across the western metro area.
By collaborating with Orono Community Ed, we will provide inclusive programs to engage all segments of our community.
WHY SUPPORT WEST LAKES PICKLEBALL
Pickleball players in our West Lakes Region are passionate about the game. Sure it’s a great way to get some exercise. Sure it’s a fun way to meet new people and test your skill at a new sport. But that’s not all. Neighbors are meeting neighbors they didn’t know lived down the street. Grandkids and grandparents are finding new ways to spend time in each other’s company. Families are finding new ground to share a common interest. New friends are becoming old friends. Laughter, encouragement, and support on and off the court are just a few of the surprise benefits of pickleball in our cities. And, that’s why over 250 community members signed a petition supporting the West Lakes Pickleball Project. We hope you will join us in making the Master Plan a reality.
